Concept project

Maple & Oak

A warm, menu-first site for a neighbourhood restaurant, designed to be read on a phone outside the front door.

This is a fictional business created to demonstrate design work. It is not a client project.

The brief

A fictional restaurant wants hungry visitors to find the menu, hours, and address in seconds — especially on mobile.

Goals

  • Menu and hours within one tap on a phone
  • Carry the room’s warm atmosphere onto the screen
  • Keep the menu easy for the owner to update

Design decisions

  1. Mobile first, literally

Hours, address, and the menu button sit above the fold on a 375px screen. The desktop layout was designed second.

  2. Menu as real text

The menu is HTML, not a PDF, so it loads fast, reads well on phones, and can be found by search engines.

  3. Warm, not heavy

Deep browns and an amber accent echo the dining room while keeping text contrast comfortable at night.
